1987s Talladega for first race in a month
April 21st, 2023 | 8:08 AM CT
MC Motorsports hasn’t been able to do NR Night in America since March 28th. This is because there hasn’t been any races to do. Idk Player has been sick and has been commentating races in-real-life, and he has been doing NR Cup Series races. But, finally, the racing action returns tonight, April 21st.
The most recent NR Night in America race for MC Motorsports was March 28th, where Gen4 Cars raced for the first time at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Marty Cmejla (#39) was the only driver. He drove the Nirto Graphics Chevrolet Impala. He was a Top 10 car all race but on a restart he got loose and out of the groove, as 2 cars wrecked in front of him. He ended up slowing way down to avoid the wreck. No caution was thrown, so he had to go from last then to finish 14th place.
“It is uncharacteristic of NR Night in America to go this far without holding races. Should be interesting tonight”.
Tonight, the 1987 iRacing cars return for the first time since December of 2022. On December 4th, 2022, Marty Cmejla drove the #39 Patrick Connell Motorsports / MC Companies Chevrolet. The tracks were Talladega and Michigan. Talladega was Cmejla’s first ever time in a 1987 car. He actually made moves for the lead and may have lead some laps. He didn’t qualify. Having no fast repairs was relatively new at the time, and it was the first 1987 NR Night race in over 8 months. Cmejla started 43rd, survived the chaos to be in the lead pack on the last lap. But, on the last lap, Frank DeAngelis got turned in Turn 3 and got airborne into the catchfence. Cars spun in front of Cmejla. He tried to slow down but Marcus Van Der Lee plowed his rear end, causing Cmejla to spin multiple times. He got 17th in this race.
Michigan wasn’t much better, he got spun with 15 to go. Luckily a caution came out for a 4 lap shootout - he got 14th. The 1987 cars so far in MC Motorsports’ history has not been that great. Will that change tonight? Here’s who is racing and the storylines coming in.
First of all, Marty Cmejla returns to NR Night in America tonight for his 125th start. He searched for his 18th Top 5 finish in his career, and is still looking for his first-career win, despite having 6-career podiums. He will drive the #39 Inside the Industry Small Business Podcast Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Inside the Industry is a relatively new sponsor to the team - only being around for 2 NR Nights. “It’s been disappointing with the lack of NR Night because of our new sponsors - we can’t give them the TV time,” Cmejla said. Cmejla says that the race is likely to be a wreckfest as it’s the first NR Night in a long time, especially with the unpredictable 1987 cars. On the side of the car, there is the new merch store domain storemcm.com. This is on the side to promote the merch store. New sponsors PVI Industries and Neary Excavating join the decklid of the car.
Marty Cmejla (#39), Frank DeAngelis (#69), and Aidan Walker (#88) at Talladega in April 2023.
Next up is Levi Lipe. Levi Lipe was signed to MC Motorsports through 2023 on April 17th, to drive the #40. Levi Lipe will make his debut tonight in this race. Lipe has a 1900 iRating, so he is only -100 on the 2,000 cut. He should be able to make it. He will drive the storemcm.com primary, which features 3 T-Shirts/Hoodies on the hood. It also has every MC Motorsports sponsor small on the quarter panel and deck lid. Lipe is going to be new to all of this, so MC Motorsports hopes that he can do well. “It’ll be a matter of teaching him the basics and the motivation on the grind to get a good result,” Cmejla said. Lipe looks forward to his debut.
The last MC Motorsports entry is Justin Connor. Justin Connor will run the Neary Excavating primary for the first time, in the #65 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The scheme was made by Levi Lipe. Justin Connor has been really good so far for MC Motorsports, with in 6 starts having a Top 20 rate of 83%, and having 1-career Top 10. Justin Connor becomes the 2nd MC Motorsports driver to earn a Top 10 that wasn’t Marty Cmejla. Justin hopes to do well tonight, as it will be his first race since March 24th where he got 16th at Kansas. It will be first Neary Excavating primary scheme ran in team history.
Overall, team owner Marty Cmejla is excited for this race. He is going to study film from December’s race to see what it comes down to here. Cmejla has done 3 NASCAR Legends Series hourly iRaces since this race, getting Top 10s in each of them. A 5th at Talladega, a 5th at Legacy Daytona, and a 7th at North Wilkesboro. He understands the cars better.
“The hardest thing about Talladega is the backstretch wall on the exit of (Turn) 2. The wall comes up fast and I’ve hit this wall a ton of times really hard. We just gotta stay clean tonight.” Cmejla does plan on qualifying tonight and doesn’t plan to take it easy. There will be single-file restarts which is always fun with the 87s. Will there be overtime? We aren’t sure yet.
For the rest of the night, there are 3 TBD races. Tracks and cars that viewers could pick. Cmejla is hoping that they are tracks he and his drivers own. Cmejla said he plans to do all 4 races tonight, even if he has to make some extra purchases. He has $70 of funding in his account.
It will definitely be a fun night! Tune in live on the Idk Player YouTube channel at 8:00 PM ET/7:00 PM CT.
